I am the first person to attend any college or university in my family. Coming from the southside of Lansing, MI, educational opportunities were scarce. That’s why when I was accepted into Michigan, I felt pride not only for me but also for my family and my community. Being first-gen means a lot. To me, I not only represent my family in this space, but I am also working to be a highlight for my community back home. Although I’m first-gen, I don’t feel like I am, or I have to do everything alone. From my academic advisors to close friends, I have been set up for success here at Michigan!
Your advice for other First-Gen students
Ask questions even if you feel your peers know the answers before you; communication is clarification. The University of Michigan has a plethora of resources that are available to students, and they may never know. Lastly, you are not alone here. At times college can seem intimidating, but this is a welcoming environment for everyone to thrive in, so find your community. As a first-gen student, always know your fellow first-gen peers are moving along this journey with you, so reach out and form a community.
