Being a UMICH First-gen has been one of the most challenging but rewarding experiences of my life. From figuring out how to even apply to UofM, registering for classes, to failing a class and now graduating this upcoming semester, it has all been such a rollercoaster. There were moments when I struggled, dealt with imposter syndrome, and had to remind myself why I started this journey in the first place. I am a proud Latina and first-generation student; I carry my family’s sacrifices and my community’s experiences with me in everything I do. My journey has shaped my passion for civil engineering and my desire to help create infrastructure that serves communities that are often overlooked. It has also motivated me to give back by supporting other students who may feel like they do not belong in spaces like Michigan. Being first-gen means more to me than being the first in my family to attend college. It means learning how to navigate unfamiliar spaces while creating a path for those who will come after me.
Your advice for other First-Gen students
Struggling or facing setbacks doesn’t mean you’re incapable; on the contrary, these are the moments that make you stronger and more resilient. Keep breaking barriers and exceeding expectations 💙.
