I was selected to be a part of the pilot cohort of the Global Career Launch in London, England this past Winter semester. In this life-altering study abroad trip, I developed a sense of confidence and purpose that I lacked before arriving at the University of Michigan. Prior to becoming a Wolverine, I had no professional development opportunities or guidance; once I stepped on campus, I recognized this gap in my demeanor and decided to improve my professional skillset. GCL immediately caught my eye, and after two months of classes and bonding alongside my cohort, I was off to gain hands-on professional development in London. Studying abroad was never feasible to me, especially as a first-generation student who was gradually adjusting to life at Michigan. However, Michigan provided me an experience that I never saw coming, and I genuinely believe my study abroad trip helped me learn to confidently and effectively take up space in every room I step in. If there’s one thing I’ve learned at Michigan, it’s this: never stop seeking out experiences, resources, and opportunities for community and self-improvement. My time in London was priceless and unforgettable, and I’m eager to see what more I accomplish here!

Your advice for other First-Gen students

It’s easy to compare yourself to others and convince yourself that you don’t belong at Michigan, but never forget that your success isn’t luck—it’s the fruit of your efforts, sacrifices, and talent. Never allow others to dim your passion or diminish everything that you’ve built on your own. We first-gen students are deserving and capable of absolutely everything. There is nothing that hard work and dedication can’t reach. Continue to surpass expectations and pave your path as you wish it to be.
