As a first-generation college student, my journey has been a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering belief that education can break generational barriers. Attending two prestigious PWI institutions, UW-Madison and UofM, I found myself navigating uncharted territory as the first in my family to pursue and successfully obtain both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. My story is one of seizing opportunities with both hands, recognizing the transformative power of education in shaping not only my future but also the narrative for generations to come. The large PWI environments posed their own set of challenges, but they were met with an indomitable spirit fueled by the desire to make a lasting impact. In the pursuit of my educational goals, I made a conscious effort to take advantage of every opportunity that came my way. From research projects to extracurricular activities, I embraced the full spectrum of experiences that academia had to offer. This proactive approach allowed me to not only excel academically but also to cultivate a holistic skill set that extends beyond the classroom. Finding balance was a crucial aspect of my journey. Acknowledging the importance of both academic and personal well-being, I navigated the rigorous demands of academia while ensuring that self-care remained a priority. Recognizing the strength in vulnerability, I was unafraid to ask for help when needed, understanding that seeking support is not a sign of weakness but a testament to one’s commitment to growth.

Your advice for other First-Gen students

As a first-generation college student, navigating the uncharted territory of higher education is both a privilege and a challenge. Learn to discern when to say ‘yes’ to opportunities that align with your goals, even if they seem daunting, and when to say ‘no’ to avoid spreading yourself too thin. Cultivate a strong support system and community—whether it’s mentors, peers, or faculty—who understand your unique journey and can provide guidance. Embrace discomfort as a sign of growth; stepping outside your comfort zone is where resilience is built. Remember, it’s okay not to have all the answers, and seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. Your journey is a narrative of determination and possibility, and your voice, as a first-gen trailblazer, has the power to inspire and shape the future for those who follow in your footsteps
