My First-Gen Proud story begins with my parents. My dad is from Iraq and became a refugee in Italy because of war. My mom is from Lebanon and also had to leave her home because of war, moving to Germany. They eventually came to the United States, got married, and built a life together. They started a business and worked hard to support four children, including me. Growing up, I saw how much dedication it took for them to provide for our family. Knowing what they went through makes me appreciate the opportunities I have, especially the chance to attend the University of Michigan. Their experiences taught me to keep going when things feel uncertain and to take my education seriously. Being a first-generation student at Michigan means carrying their determination with me as I find my own path. I am proud of where my family comes from and everything my parents have built. As I work toward my future, I hope to honor their sacrifices and make the most of the opportunities their hard work helped make possible.

Your advice for other First-Gen students

My advice for other first-gen students is to remember that you do not have to figure everything out on your own. Ask questions, go to office hours, and connect with people who can support you. You belong here, even when college feels unfamiliar or overwhelming. Be proud of your family’s journey, but also give yourself room to explore your own interests and make mistakes. Your family’s sacrifices can motivate you without becoming pressure to be perfect. Celebrate your progress because you’ve worked hard to get here.
