It’s perfectly normal not to have everything figured out from the start; trust the process, be open to new possibilities, and let your status as a first-gen student be a source of pride.

My parents and I moved to the United States when I was in 3rd grade. From a very early age, they instilled in me that education is the gateway to a life free from hardship and one that is full of choices. My parents never had the opportunity to pursue higher education themselves due to responsibilities and lack of opportunities in the country that they came from. This motivates me to take immense pride in being a living testament to their hard work. I am a strong believer that anything is possible with hard work and determination. The University of Michigan has allowed me to put this belief into practice with all the opportunities that it offers allowing me to prosper, and for that, it will forever have a place in my heart. Your advice for other First-Gen students

As a first-generation college student, I vividly remember the blend of excitement and anxiety on my first day on campus. I soon learned that seeking help was not a sign of weakness but an act of courage; it’s the key to overcoming the challenges and uncertainties that come with this unique journey. On campus, opportunities abound – from clubs and organizations to internships and research projects. These experiences not only enrich your college life but also help you discover new passions and perhaps unexpected career paths that neither you nor your family might have been aware of. The beauty of college lies in the freedom to explore and create your unique path. It’s perfectly normal not to have everything figured out from the start; trust the process, be open to new possibilities, and let your status as a first-gen student be a source of pride. You belong here, and your presence enriches the campus community. In essence, being a first-gen student is an extraordinary journey filled with opportunities, growth, and self-discovery. So, don’t be afraid to ask for help, seize every opportunity, and take pride in your remarkable path. You’re not just a college student; you’re a pioneer, and your legacy is the pursuit of knowledge and a brighter future.
